Let me start off by saying, this is the first military romance that I’ve read. I tend to stay away from these, as I’m more into contemporary and erotica. That being said, I give Theresa Marguerite Hewitt five stars for this military romance. I absolutely fell in love with this story. I went into it, thinking that I wasn’t going to like it, but my mind was changed the instant I started it.
The book opened with an outstanding prologue. It hooked me. Great job with that, Theresa!
Rhea has lost both her mother and brother, who was a Navy SEAL. With no one left except her best friend Kendall, and her mother’s best friend, Dana, Rhea lives a shell of her former life. That is, until Chadwick Payne comes home.
Rhea has loved Chad ever since she was ten years old. Chad’s loved Rhea ever since he was fifteen. They just never told each other. So when Chad comes home for two weeks, he and Rhea instantly connect, starting a relationship.
These two weeks are filled with passionate lovemaking and discoveries. At the end of those two weeks though, they must say goodbye, as Chad leaves to an unknown location for an unknown amount of time. This novel filled me with emotion, especially during the scene where Chad had to leave. I cried, so hard. I felt as if a part of me was leaving too. I loved the supporting characters as well, Kendall, Rosa, Reno (which is my best friend’s name, oddly enough. She’s in the Navy as well.), Duke, and Dana. Rhea has an amazing support system and her relationship with each character is different.
I highly believe that Theresa was writing from experience. The details that she was able to describe were down to a T. Unless she did some extensive research… The emotional goodbye scene also felt as if she was drawing from experience.
The details, as I said, were spectacular. I love when I am able to fully envision what an author is describing; it makes the story ten times better for me.
The story also switches form Rhea’s point of view, to Chad’s. I loved getting to pick inside of Chad’s mind, learning that his feelings for Rhea are true and deep. Theresa, I loved this story. I’m already working on Coming Home, which is the second book in the Wakefield Romance series. Thank you so much for asking me to review these! Who knew that I would actually enjoy a military romance…
